| Sandy has had a
lifelong passion for all creatures. She grew up in Cedar Rapids,
Iowa with a Shepherd mix named Princess and several cats. Her
parents were generous in allowing her to also have various lizards,
rodents, and birds throughout her childhood. She has never known life
without pets.
She moved to Kansas City in 1992 to attend the Kansas City Art Institute. She lived in the dorms and for the first time she was without a pet. She bought an Iguana and adopted a mouse that had been used in a performance piece by a friend. She had to have creatures around her. In August of 1993, she came upon Zygo, her first dog. This began her obsession with learning all about dog behavior. Following Zygo came Sitka and Kuvas in 1994, and Poodle in 1999. She began to realize that nothing would make her happier than working with dogs full-time. Shortly thereafter, in 1994, she found herself working at a weird little place that made dog biscuits. The weird little company turned out to be Three Dog Bakery and the next four and a half years of her life. She managed both the Westport and Plaza stores and her last year there she worked on the Trademark License Team. She trained new store owners and traveled to assist them in opening their stores. After having the unique opportunity of spending a great deal of time with Dan Dye and Mark Beckloff, Three Dogs founders, she too had been bitten by the entrepreneurial bug. She left Three Dog in May of 1999 and citydog began in July of 1999. In 2003 she met her now Fiancé, Cameron and his dog Rex and cat Phoebe. They met at, where else? The dog park. Today they have 3 dogs, 1 cat, and 1 lizard and live in the West Plaza neighborhood. In the past she has volunteered at the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City walking, bathing, and caring for the shelter dogs. She has been a member of KC SCOOP since their inception in 2000 and is currently their Vice-President. KC SCOOP is the non-profit that secured the three acre lot at Penn Valley Park for Kansas City's first urban off-leash park. citydog was voted Kansas City's Best Pet Sitting Company in October of 2000 by The Pitch. Sandy graduated from the Kaufmann Foundation's entrepreneurial FastTrac program in the spring of 2004. |
