The
beginning
The driving factors of citydog and everything we do is based upon
five elements; passion, creativity,
honesty, dedication and an
immense
love and understanding of pets. We
believe that if you posses these five qualities nearly anything can be
attained. These are the
motivations for citydog.
citydog began in July of 1999. Sandy
Betts (formerly Brown), the founder, began her professional career with
pets in 1994 working at Three Dog Bakery. She
managed their Westport
and Plaza retail bakeries and was a Trademark License Program
Representative, helping to launch several of the Licensed Three Dog Bakery
stores around the country. It
was there she realized her passion was
all about dogs, their parents, and the amazing relationship that develops
between the two.
From the day she transplanted herself from Iowa to Kansas City in 1992 to
attend the Kansas City Art Institute, she's always lived in Kansas
City's urban core. With every move she made, she had her four
dogs in tow, Zygo, Sitka,
Kuvas, and Diller. Because of her love
and dedication to them, she never
considered giving any of them up to make finding the next home easier.
They'd lived in Columbus Park to Quality Hill to Hyde Park to
Volker to West Plaza to Brookside and now settling in as homeowners
in the Longfellow/Dutch Hill neighborhood. Throughout
several moves, their yard space was varied and eclectic. Sometimes
they had a fenced yard, sometimes they lived on the penthouse level of an
apartment building. She walked them several times per day and knew
that as long as they got their exercise it didn't matter how big their
yard was or if they had one at all. She knew it was possible to
responsibly keep a dog in an urban environment as long as they received
proper exercise and socialization. She was also aware that not
everyone has the time to walk their dogs as often they should...and who
comes to care for Midtown pets when their parents are out of town.
Sure, there were pet sitting companies, but none of them served the
midtown area. Asking these questions allowed Sandy to dream about
citydog.
With
a vision of building a creative pet
care business unlike anything that existed, she left Three Dog Bakery in
May of 1999 and come July, Kansas City was introduced to citydog.
It is a business that began with the dedication
of one person, and for six years citydog has been a company whose client
base and employee base is made up of people who love pets and love the
city - people just like you.
