CITYDOG, PUBLISHES THE FIRST “WELCOME HOME” FOLDER, WHICH IS ONE SOURCE FOR ALL THINGS DOG IN KANSAS CITY

Kansas City, MO –  “Our local dog community is thriving,” says Sandra Brown, owner and founder of citydog, a dog walking and pet sitting service, which has served Midtown Kansas City since 1999.  “There are so many wonderful dog organizations, businesses and events that sometimes go unnoticed, even by pet lovers that are active in the community.  We felt there was a need to provide one source where long time Kansas Citians as well as pet lovers new to the area can go to receive information that will help them become more responsible and social pet owners.”

They created the Welcome Home Folder.  It is a twice-yearly publication with an initial distribution of 2,000 folders going to adoptions at The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City, Animal Haven, and Wayside Waifs.   Real estate companies, pet-friendly condos, and lofts in the River Market, Downtown and Plaza areas are also an important outlet for the folder.  “Distribution, we feel, is vital to its success for our advertisers as well as reaching the people who are in the heart of the city,” says Brown.

Welcome Home contains advertising, which highlights local pet related businesses, an “Urban Oasis” insert, brochures with useful information from The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit page, and citydog’s spring 2003 catalog.  The advertisers range from pet insurance, and veterinarians to dog daycares and specialty retail shops.  Each business offers services or products that will assist pet owners in their efforts to provide a comfortable and healthy lifestyle for their pets.

In addition to advertising, there is also an insert titled “Urban Oasis”.  “This is a section we developed mainly with newcomers to Kansas City in mind.” notes Brown,  “While you can go to the phone book for some information, you will only know other things through living here and word of mouth.  It highlights some of our employee’s and customer’s favorite places to go on a walk with their dogs.  This is a great way for people to quickly find a social outlet for their dogs as well as become acquainted with nooks and crannies in different neighborhoods.”

Citydog also provided advertising space at no charge to many local, non-profit, grassroots dog organizations as well as local shelters and rescue groups.  Through this page, they hope to raise awareness of the many different groups that are in need of volunteers, donations, and support.

The folder also contains information from the ultimate promoter of responsible pet ownership, the ASPCA.  They produce an information page entitled “Urban Dog Etiquette and Street Sense, How to Properly Promenade Your Pooch in Public.”  It gives basic tips on caring for your dog and being respectful of your dog-less neighbors in condensed living areas.   “When we choose to keep dogs in crowded urban areas, we take on additional responsibilities.  Unfortunately, when there is little consideration for the neighbors, more doors close to dogkeepers.  With a little training and thoughtfulness, more businesses and public areas will begin to put out the welcome mat for both you and your dog,” says the ASPCA.  “With the increase of pet-friendly living opportunities in Downtown we want more people to be aware of the fact that it is possible to love your dog and live your life in an urban environment,” says Brown.

Distribution of the first issue begins in January.  Citydog is expecting to more than double their initial distribution numbers in July for the second folder. Along with an increase in distribution, they will also expand the content of the second issue to include more articles as well as a listing of non-dog businesses that welcomes pets into their establishments.  For more information on the Welcome Home folder or citydog’s upcoming projects, they can be reached at 816.561.4504 or sociallysavvy@citydogwalking.com.
